Can you tell me the best way to treat jock itch? The infected area is somewhere below and on the sides of the scrotum and the middle portion of the penis. Is it recommended to use hydrogen peroxide to clean the infected area prior to using anti-fungal creams? Please answer ASAP. Thanks.

Tineus cruris, a.k.a., jock itch, is one of several maladies producing irritation in the groin that's the source of prolonged, embarrassing, and not-very-humorous discomfort. Caused by dermatophytes, mold-like fungi whose idea of a dream home is a moist, confined area of skin, jock itch primarily affects people, usually men, who provide such accommodations in the form of sweaty crotches. Particularly at risk are folks who frequent public showers and locker rooms, where thriving fungi have their heyday among damp towels, smelly jock straps, and wet floors. Dermatophytes are also responsible for the other common scourges of gym-goers and athletes, body ringworm and athlete's foot, which sometimes appear concurrently with jock itch. What is Jock itch?
Jock itch is the common name for ring worm of the groin, or tinea cruris which is the medical term for the condition. Jock itch is a fungus infection and is caused by mold-like fungi called dermatophytes which thrive on the warm, moist area around the groin which allows it to multiply.

What causes jock itch?
Jock itch is normally caused by coming into contact with some other human being or even an animal which already has the infection. You can get the infection by touching somebody else’s ringworm, sharing towels, etc. Animals also spread this disease if you touch an animal with a ringworm infection and touch your groin area afterwards you may become infected. It is also possible to get jock itch if you suffer from athlete’s foot. Jock itch is caused by the same fungus which caused athletes foot, so if you happen to touch your feet and then your groin area you may get a nasty surprise – in the form of jock itch.

What are the signs and symptoms of jock itch?
The symptoms of jock itch include:

 itching, chafing, or burning in the groin, thigh, or anal area
 skin redness in the groin, thigh, or anal area
 flaking, peeling, or cracking skin
 a circular, red, raised rash with elevated edges

Jock itch can affect anyone, guys or girls, who tend to sweat a lot. However people who suffer from diabetes or obesity are more susceptible to the infection.

How do you prevent jock itch?
The one most important factor in the prevention of jock itch is good hygiene around the groin area. Make sure you keep the area clean and as free of sweat as is possible. Also make sure the area is dry by using a clean towel. If you tend to play a lot of sports or are an athletic person try to wash the area as often as possible and try not to wear tight fitting clothes.

Diet is known to have a major effect on the occurrence and recurrence of jock itch. If the diet is inadequate or heavily biased towards carbohydrates like refined flour, alcohol and sugar the yeast organism flourishes and overwhelms the body's ability to fight it. If this is the case the jock itch will come back repeatedly even though it may diminish for a while.

You can get jock itch by touching a person who has one. Some kinds of fungi live on damp surfaces, like the floors in public showers or locker rooms. You can easily pick up a fungus there.

Other likely indicators of jock itch are fungal infections elsewhere in the body, like the tongue, mouth and throat, ringworm on the legs or torso and scalp and nail infections.
